Lighting & LED from China: OEM Manufacturers & Buyers Guide

LED lighting is one of the most fragmented categories in Chinese manufacturing. Buyers source everything from high-bay and panel lights for warehouses and offices, to flood, street, and solar lights for outdoor infrastructure, to smart downlights, ceiling lights, and LED strips for residential and hospitality projects. Specialist categories include COB LED modules, DALI-2 drivers, horticultural grow lights, explosion-proof fixtures, emergency lights, and PAR stage lights. First orders typically fall between $3,000 and $50,000.

Specifications and certifications to verify before any purchase order: luminous efficacy (lm/W), CRI and R9 values for color-critical applications, CCT bin tolerance (ANSI 7-step or tighter), IP and IK ratings, surge protection (IEC 61643-11), LM-79 photometric reports, LM-80 and TM-21 lumen-maintenance data, and the right market certifications. For the EU this means CE marking under LVD and EMC plus RoHS; for the US, UL/ETL and UL listing; for Saudi Arabia and the GCC, SASO 2902 and SABER. Hazardous-area fixtures need ATEX/IECEx, and rebate-eligible US commercial fixtures need DLC qualification.

Top manufacturing regions: Shenzhen for LED drivers, smart modules, and RF-connected fixtures; Guangzhou and Foshan for commercial, stage, and strip lighting; Zhongshan (Guzhen) for traditional lamps and retrofit bulbs; and Ningbo for solar street lights. Zhongshan and Shenzhen factories are the first stop for most lighting buyers; Ningbo is the right place when solar integration matters.

Common pitfalls: spec-sheet lumen figures measured at 25°C that drop 10–15% in real installation heat; self-declared IP ratings that fail in the field; CCT drift between production batches; driver capacitors that fail before the LED chip; and certificates that belong to a different model or are outright cloned. A pre-certified LED module does not certify the finished fixture — changing the driver, optics, or housing can void compliance. Locking the BOM and approved alternatives is as important in lighting as it is in electronics.
