Smart home hardware from China covers a wide spectrum: smart door locks, IP security cameras, video doorbells, motion and door-window sensors, smoke detectors, smart plugs and wall switches, thermostats, curtain motors, lighting controllers, and multi-protocol gateways. Most share one thing: a radio. That single fact determines the certification burden, the factory capability you need, and where things usually go wrong.

Key specs and certifications to verify

Start with the RF stack. A device marketed as "Zigbee" should specify Zigbee 3.0 and be tested against CSA conformance. A "Matter-compatible" claim is not the same as Matter certification: only CSA-certified devices can legally carry the Matter logo. Certification typically takes 3–6 months and costs $8,000–15,000; pre-certified modules cut this to 6–10 weeks. For the US, verify FCC Part 15. For the EU, confirm CE RED with ETSI EN 300 328 and EN 301 489 test reports. UKCA is now mandatory for new UK placements.

Mechanical and electrical specs matter just as much. Smart locks need ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 or 2 for commercial use and a 50,000-cycle motor endurance report. DIN-rail smart breakers must carry IEC 60898/61009 and a verified breaking capacity. Cameras need genuine ONVIF Profile S/G conformance certificates and confirmed sensor models — not factory self-declarations.

Top manufacturing regions

Shenzhen and Dongguan host the densest ecosystem for RF modules, plastic tooling, and assembly. Most CSA-authorized test labs and EMC pre-compliance facilities are here. Hangzhou and Suzhou have strong firmware/cloud integration partners, particularly for Tuya- and platform-tied devices. For mechanical components like lock bodies and curtain motors, Foshan and Zhongshan supply metals and motors at scale.

Common pitfalls

• Module substitution. Factories swap pre-certified RF modules for cheaper clones after sample approval. Verify module model, FCC ID, and lot traceability on incoming inspection.
• Untested multi-protocol coexistence. A gateway passing Zigbee and BLE tests separately can fail when both radios run simultaneously. Demand packet-loss results under joint load.
• Firmware drift. Without version hashing and escrow, factories can push unapproved firmware updates that invalidate certification or break hub compatibility.
• Marking shortcuts. CE/FCC labels belong on the product, not only the box. Non-compliant marking is a customs and retailer rejection risk.
