Smart Downlight (RGBCW, Tuya / Zigbee)
RGBCW smart downlights from China: Tuya/Zigbee 3.0, tunable white, ≥90 lm/W for SASO 2902, cut-out sizing. OEM from 1,000 units, FCC/CE/SASO.
Smart downlights are the highest-volume fixture in a Gulf villa or apartment fit-out, and the single most common Saudi rejection point is efficiency: SASO 2902:2023 requires ≥90 lm/W, mandatory since 2025-06-01. A common 80 lm/W RGBCW downlight that ships fine elsewhere will be rejected at SABER. This page covers what to verify on an RGBCW smart downlight sourced from China for the Saudi and GCC market.
RGBCW driver and efficacy
A smart downlight combines an LED engine, a constant-current driver, and a wireless control board. The efficacy figure is measured across the whole fixture at the rated drive current — not the bare LED. Two pitfalls:
- Efficacy quoted at the wrong current. Some factories cite ≥100 lm/W at a low drive current, then ship at a higher current where efficacy drops below 90 lm/W. Ask for the photometric report at the production drive current.
- RGBCW dilutes efficacy. The RGB channels lower overall efficacy versus a pure white fixture. Confirm the ≥90 lm/W figure is met in the tunable-white mode that dominates real use.
The action item: require an accredited photometric report (ILAC lab) showing ≥90 lm/W at the production current, with the model number matching the unit. This is cheap to verify before order and expensive to discover at customs.
Protocol and control
Tuya Wi-Fi dominates the Gulf white-label channel — its app supports Arabic and integrates with Alexa and Google Assistant (see the Tuya platform reference). Zigbee 3.0 SKUs suit hub-based whole-home systems with local control. Confirm the dimming curve has no visible flicker below ~5% brightness — a frequent complaint on budget drivers that pass spec on paper.
Saudi / GCC market notes
- Efficacy: ≥90 lm/W per SASO 2902:2023 — the gating requirement, verified on an accredited photometric report.
- Mains: 220V/60Hz build; the driver and label must state 60Hz.
- Conformity: registered on SABER under SASO; factory supplies the IEC 60335/62368 and photometric reports.
- Documentation: Arabic manual and label (rated voltage, frequency, power).
- Cut-out fit: confirm Ø75/90/150mm matches the ceiling spec common in Gulf gypsum ceilings.
