Humidity Protection & Sensing in China Electronics

Humidity shows up in two ways when sourcing China-made electronics: as a sensing requirement (IoT sensors reporting temperature/humidity over Zigbee or Matter) and as an environmental threat that conformal coating defends against. For outdoor or condensing environments, PCBAs get a conformal coat — acrylic, silicone, or urethane — inspected to IPC-CC-830B for coverage and thickness, typically 25–75 µm. The common failure is a coating that looks complete but has pinholes or skips under connectors, letting moisture cause leakage and corrosion months later, so coverage inspection under UV and a thickness check matter more than the spec sheet.

In sourcing terms, humidity is both a sensed variable and a reliability risk. The pitfall is treating conformal coating as a checkbox — uneven coverage, pinholes, or wrong material for the environment defeats the protection, so inspect to IPC-CC-830B and match the coating chemistry (acrylic vs silicone vs urethane) to the actual exposure.
