A DIN-rail smart breaker sits in the distribution board and adds energy metering, remote on/off, and protection trips to a circuit — popular in Gulf villas for per-circuit control and load monitoring. Because it is a protective device in the consumer unit, the deciding requirement is the breaker safety standard (IEC 60898 / 61009), and a 220V/60Hz rating. With a radio, the Saudi market needs CST approval alongside SASO conformity. This page covers DIN-rail smart breakers sourced from China for KSA.

Protection rating is non-negotiable

A smart breaker is first a breaker. Two points:

  • Breaking capacity and standard. Confirm the device meets IEC 60898 (MCB) or IEC 61009 (RCBO with leakage protection) with the rated breaking capacity (e.g., 6kA). A “smart switch” that does not actually break fault current is dangerous, not just non-compliant.
  • 60Hz rating. The breaker and its metering must be rated and labelled for 220V/60Hz — a 50Hz-only build is wrong for the Gulf.

The action item: require the IEC 60898/61009 test report from an accredited lab, and confirm the breaking capacity matches the board design — this is a safety-critical item, not a convenience gadget.

Metering and control

±1% energy metering enables per-circuit monitoring; remote on/off and scheduling add control. Zigbee 3.0 binds to a local hub; Tuya Wi-Fi runs the Tuya app (Tuya reference); some SKUs add RS485 Modbus for integration. Pair with a gateway for whole-board visibility.

Saudi / GCC market notes

  • Safety standard: IEC 60898 / 61009 with rated breaking capacity — accredited report required.
  • Mains: 220V/60Hz rating and label.
  • Wireless approval: the radio needs CST type approval.
  • Documentation: Arabic manual and label.
