IEC 61850 Substation & IIoT Gateways from China

IEC 61850 is the communication standard for substation automation and increasingly for industrial Ethernet gear, defining GOOSE messaging, MMS, and station/process bus architecture. Chinese vendors now build IEC 61850-3 rated switches and gateways (the -3 part adds substation-grade EMC and temperature hardening) with IEEE 1588v2 PTP time sync. EU integrators sourcing these direct rather than through Hong Kong middlemen have reported double-digit cost savings — one case here cut about 22% — but the hardware must hold genuine IEC 61850-3 conformance, not just a marketing claim.

When sourcing substation gear, the risk is a switch labelled '61850-ready' that lacks the -3 EMC/thermal hardening or real conformance testing. We confirm the IEC 61850-3 certificate, check IEEE 1588v2 PTP support, and validate EMC class against the substation environment.
