U.FL (also sold as IPEX or AMC) is the tiny board-edge RF connector used on most ESP32, nRF52, and LoRa modules to attach an external antenna. It typically rates to 6 GHz and survives only about 30 mating cycles, so it is meant for assembly, not field reconnection. China factories often substitute lower-grade U.FL clones with poor gold plating, which pushes VSWR above the 1.5:1 target and degrades range.
When you source U.FL connectors or pre-fitted pigtails from China, the real risks are intermittent center-pin contact and wrong cable impedance (it must be 50Ω, not 75Ω). We verify gold plating, pull-test the crimp, and check VSWR on a sample before mass shipment.
