ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) means the factory already owns the product design and you rebrand it — distinct from OEM, where you bring the design and the factory builds to your spec. For IoT sensors, gadgets, and private-label hardware this lowers tooling cost and time-to-market, but you give up exclusivity and control over the BOM. The ODM spectrum runs from pure rebadge (logo and packaging only) to semi-custom (your firmware, housing tweaks, or feature changes on a shared platform), and tooling for any meaningful mold change still runs thousands of USD with weeks of lead time.
When you pick ODM, the trade-off is speed and low NRE against shared design and weaker IP protection — the same reference unit is often sold to your competitors. Lock down what's exclusive (firmware, ID, packaging) in writing, because a stock ODM design is not yours by default.

What's the difference between OEM and ODM?
With OEM you supply the design and the factory manufactures it; with ODM the factory supplies an existing design you rebrand. ODM is faster and cheaper to launch but offers little exclusivity, since the same base product is sold to other buyers too.
Can I get exclusivity on an ODM product?
You can negotiate exclusivity on cosmetic elements (housing, color, packaging) and custom firmware, but the underlying reference design usually stays shared. True exclusivity costs more and often requires committing to volume or paying for tooling that the factory won't reuse.
