Modbus is the workhorse fieldbus protocol in industrial IoT, and most of the China-made hardware around it falls into two buckets: Modbus RTU serial converters (RS-485/RS-232 to Ethernet or to a cellular gateway) and DIN-rail gateways that bridge Modbus to MQTT or a cloud platform. For these we care less about price and more about cold-start behavior and isolation — a gateway spec'd for -40°C and with proper RS-485 surge/isolation survives a substation; a consumer-grade board does not. Sourcing direct also matters: many 'brands' are rebadged Shenzhen modules, and tracing the real maker (we have done this via the FCC grantee database) cuts cost and gets you firmware support.
Sourcing Modbus hardware means buying serial-to-IP converters or protocol gateways, usually on DIN rail; the pitfall is grabbing a consumer-temperature board for an industrial site. We check operating temperature range, RS-485 isolation, and whether the supplier is the real manufacturer or a reseller.

A converter is a transparent bridge (e.g. RS-485 to Ethernet) that passes Modbus frames unchanged. A gateway translates Modbus into another protocol like MQTT or an IEC standard, so it parses and remaps registers.

For cabinet or outdoor industrial use, spec -40°C to +75°C operating range and validate the actual components, not just the datasheet. Consumer-grade gateways rated to 0°C fail on cold starts in unheated enclosures.
