IPC Standards for China PCB Assembly: Inspection & Acceptance

1 resources tagged with "Ipc"

IPC standards are the shared language for judging whether a Chinese-built PCBA is acceptable — IPC-A-610 for assembly workmanship, J-STD-001 for soldering, and IPC-CC-830 for conformal coating. Specifying an IPC class in your PO (Class 2 for most commercial electronics, Class 3 for high-reliability) matters more than a generic AQL number, because it tells the factory exactly which solder, void, and defect limits apply. We inspect against the IPC class you name rather than the factory's house standard.

IPC is a body of electronics assembly standards used to define and verify build quality. The common buyer pitfall is asking for AQL sampling without naming an IPC class, which leaves workmanship limits to the factory's discretion — so we write the class into the PO and check against it at inspection.

FAQ

Which IPC class should I specify for my product?

Class 2 covers most consumer and commercial electronics. Class 3 applies to products where downtime or failure is costly — medical, automotive, aerospace, industrial control — and tightens solder, void, and inspection limits accordingly.

Does an IPC standard replace AQL sampling?

No, they work together. AQL defines how many units you sample; the IPC class defines what counts as a defect on each sampled unit. Using AQL alone leaves workmanship criteria undefined.
