Most low-cost WiFi connectivity in China-built IoT runs on Espressif's ESP32 family, and the variant matters: ESP32-S3 adds AI/vector instructions and more I/O, ESP32-C3 is a cheaper RISC-V single-core, and the older ESP32 is dual-core classic. Module form (WROOM vs WROVER, integrated antenna vs U.FL) and pre-existing CE/RED and FCC certification on the module decide whether you re-certify your whole product. OEM module runs commonly start around 1,000 units. The trap is clone modules that look identical but use re-marked or out-of-spec flash and fail intermittently in the field.
