UDL vs Point Load: Getting the Load Rating Right

UDL (uniformly distributed load) is the standard for shelf load capacity — it assumes load is evenly spread across the entire shelf surface. Point load capacity is always lower: a 350 kg UDL shelf might only handle 120 kg as a point load at the centre. For warehouse buyers stacking palletized goods, point load behaviour matters. Ask the factory for both figures and verify against your actual storage scenario.

Steel gauge is frequently misrepresented. 18-gauge steel is 1.2mm thick — many factories supply 20-gauge (0.9mm) uprights while quoting 18-gauge. Bring calipers to the sample inspection and measure upright wall thickness at multiple points. The boltless connector (rivet-in lug) is the structural weak point: verify connector engagement depth and pull-out force. A simple pull-out test with a luggage scale should show >200 kg pull-out resistance per connector.

Powder Coat Quality and Export Packaging

Powder coat thickness directly affects corrosion resistance. For warehouse environments with forklifts and moisture, 60–80μm minimum is the industry standard — thinner coatings chip at connector contact points and rust within 12 months. Test coating adhesion with a cross-cut adhesion test (ISO 2409, rating 0 or 1 required). Salt spray resistance (ISO 9227) at 240 hours with no red rust indicates a quality coating system.

Flat-pack export packaging is essential for cost efficiency: a 5-tier rack that ships assembled occupies 4–5× the freight volume of a flat-pack unit. Verify that flat-pack packaging protects upright corners during container loading — corrugate corner protectors and inner carton dividers add $0.50–1.00 per unit but prevent the scratch damage that generates returns from retail buyers.
