Canton Fair (China Import and Export Fair)

Engineer's guide to sourcing electronics at the Canton Fair in Guangzhou — when Phase 1 runs, who exhibits, and how to vet suppliers on the floor.

The Canton Fair is the largest trade fair in China — Phase 1 alone (Electronics & Household Appliances) fills several halls at the Pazhou complex with thousands of exhibitors. For electronics buyers it is the single densest place to meet manufacturers face-to-face, but density is also the trap: most booths are trading companies, not factories.

Why it matters for electronics buyers

Phase 1 covers consumer electronics, appliances, lighting, and electronic components — the categories we work in. A buyer can walk a shortlist of 15-20 candidate suppliers in two days, which would take weeks to arrange remotely. The value is speed of qualification, not price discovery.

How we work the floor

We treat the fair as an audit pre-screen, not a buying trip. For each booth we ask three questions that separate factories from traders: where is the plant, what is the SMT line capacity, and can they show an IPC-A-610 inspection report. A real manufacturer answers in 30 seconds; a trader changes the subject.

Practical notes

  • Phase 1 is the electronics phase — confirm the exact dates above before booking flights, as the schedule shifts each session.
  • Bring a printed spec and a sample, not just photos — it filters out booths that cannot engineer to your requirement.
  • Booth numbers are not factory addresses. Always verify with a separate factory audit before paying a deposit.
