Battery Cell Quality: The Variable Suppliers Don’t Advertise

The single biggest differentiator between a $14 drill set and a $38 one is the battery cell inside the pack. Chinese factories source cells from three tiers: brand-name cells (Samsung 18650, Panasonic, Murata), domestic Tier-1 cells (BAK, CATL cylindrical), and generic unbranded cells. Generic cells have rated capacity on paper but lose 30–40% capacity within 150 charge cycles. For branded wholesale buyers or Amazon sellers, this becomes a return wave at months 3–4.

Require the factory to declare cell supplier and provide a cell spec sheet with test data before sampling. If they cannot provide it, assume generic cells. For products targeting EU/UK professional markets, CE compliance under the Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU) is mandatory for 18V tool systems — the battery charger is specifically in scope. Verify the CE declaration of conformity covers the charger, not just the drill body.

Torque Specification and Load Testing

No-load RPM figures are easy to hit. Torque under actual load is where cheap drills fail. Specifications often state peak torque measured at stall (motor locked) — this is not the usable working torque. For a 45 Nm claim, verify working torque at 50% speed under continuous 30-second load cycles. Request a torque test report from the factory using a calibrated torque meter.

Chuck quality is a secondary inspection point: the keyless chuck on sub-$20 sets frequently slips on bits above 15 Nm. Test with a 25mm spade bit in hardwood during sample inspection. Clutch settings (18–24 positions typical) should engage at repeatable torque values — test at least positions 3, 9, and 18. For European retail compliance, verify the tool is marked with noise and vibration emission values per EN 62841-2-1.
