What to Check When Sourcing

Street lights face the harshest operating conditions of any luminaire: temperature extremes, UV exposure, road salt, insects, and vibration from heavy vehicles. The failure modes are correspondingly severe. When sourcing municipal lighting from China, durability testing is non-negotiable.

ENEC vs. self-declared CE. For EU public road installations, many tenders require ENEC marking (notified body certification under EN 60598-1 and EN 55015). Self-declared CE is legally sufficient for private installations but may not satisfy municipal procurement specifications. Verify which your buyer requires before selecting a factory. A factory audit should confirm ENEC certification status with the notified body.

Photocell socket (NEMA/Zhaga). If the fixture needs smart city or remote monitoring integration, confirm whether the photocell socket is NEMA 5-pin (North America) or Zhaga Book 18 (Europe/Asia). These are not interchangeable.

Optical distribution type. Street lights use asymmetric distributions (Type II, III, IV per IES). Ask the factory for an IES photometric file — this is a machine-readable file that your lighting designer or municipality can import into AGi32 or Dialux to verify road compliance. For power electronics like LED drivers, driver quality is equally critical.

Common Issues

Rust at mounting bracket — Bracket corrosion is a common warranty claim. Specify hot-dip galvanized or 304 SS hardware for coastal or high-humidity environments. For a complete sourcing workflow, see our factory audit checklist.

Thermal gap at housing seal — The joint between the optical chamber and driver chamber is a common moisture ingress point. Inspect sample units by removing the driver cover after an IP test.
