What to Check When Sourcing
Solar panels are a 25-year investment. The price-per-watt you see on Alibaba rarely reflects the actual quality of cells, encapsulant, or backsheet — and those differences determine whether your panel still produces 90% of rated power in year 10 or year 25. When sourcing power electronics like solar panels, material traceability is essential.
Cell manufacturer, not just panel brand. Ask specifically which cell manufacturer’s cells are in the panel — a key question during factory audits. Tier 1 cells (LONGi, JA Solar, Risen, Canadian Solar) come from automated lines with tight efficiency binning. Tier 3 cells may be reject batches from Tier 1 manufacturers. Request the cell EL (electroluminescence) inspection report for your specific order.
Encapsulant and backsheet materials. EVA encapsulant yellows and delaminates faster than POE in humid climates. For rooftop installations in tropical or coastal environments, specify POE or EVA+POE encapsulant. The backsheet should be fluoropolymer-based (KPf or TPT), not polyamide-only.
IEC 61730 vs. IEC 61215. IEC 61215 covers performance; IEC 61730 covers safety. Both are required for virtually all legitimate grid-tied installations. Verify the specific model you’re ordering — not just the brand — is listed on the certification body’s database. A quality inspection should cross-check panel serial numbers against the certification records.
Junction box and connector quality. The junction box contains the bypass diodes that protect shaded cells. Inspect the junction box IP rating (IP68 minimum for outdoor), verify the bypass diode brand (Schottky diodes from Vishay or equivalent), and confirm the MC4 connector brand (Stäubli original or licensed manufacturer). Fake MC4 connectors are one of the most common failure points in installed PV systems.
Flash test data. Each panel should ship with a factory flash test data sheet showing actual Pmax, Voc, Isc, and Vmp at STC (Standard Test Conditions: 1000W/m², 25°C). This is your baseline for acceptance testing. Cross-check flash data against your own independent flash test on a 5% sample during incoming inspection.
Wind and snow load rating. IEC 61215 tests panels at 2400Pa front and 2400Pa rear load. For markets with heavy snow (Canada, Northern Europe, Japan) or high wind (coastal sites), specify mechanical load ratings: 5400Pa front load / 2400Pa rear load is available from premium manufacturers.
Common Issues
Power tolerance. “±3% tolerance” on a 400W panel means you could receive a 388W panel that’s within spec. Specify “0/+3% positive tolerance” (i.e., panels must measure at or above rated Pmax). Enforce this in your purchase contract with a rejection clause for panels measuring below rated Pmax.
Microcracks from shipping — Half-cut cells are more resistant than full cells, but inadequate pallet packaging still causes microcracks. Specify 5 panels per box minimum with foam corner protection and diagonal bracing on pallets.
Serial number traceability — For warranty purposes, each panel’s serial number should be traceable to its cell lot, encapsulant batch, and production date in the factory’s records. Request a sample traceability report during the factory audit. Without traceability, warranty claims and defect investigations become impossible.
