OEKO-TEX Standard 100: Why Premium Buyers Require It

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certifies that every component of a textile product (fabric, thread, printing inks, zippers, buttons) has been tested for harmful substances and is harmless to human health. For tote bags used for grocery shopping, baby items, or given as gifts to families with children, skin contact is continuous — OEKO-TEX provides a credible third-party safety claim. Major European retailers (Aldi, Lidl, Carrefour) include OEKO-TEX as a purchasing requirement for promotional textile items. The certification requires all components to be tested — not just the base fabric. Screen printing inks are a common failure point: azo dyes that can release carcinogenic aromatic amines are banned under OEKO-TEX and EU REACH (EN ISO 14362-1). Request OEKO-TEX certification documents that list the factory name, product description, and all components tested. A certificate covering only the fabric does not cover the inks.

RPET Recycled Content Verification and Screen Print Durability

RPET (recycled PET from plastic bottles) is increasingly demanded by ESG-conscious corporate buyers. GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certification provides third-party verification of the recycled content percentage — without GRS, an “RPET” claim is unverifiable and potentially misleading. GRS certification is held by the fabric supplier, not the bag factory. Verify the factory sources fabric from a GRS-certified supplier and request the transaction certificates showing the supply chain.

Screen print color fastness is the primary quality concern for tote bags: rubbing fastness (wet and dry) should meet ISO 105-X12 Grade 4 minimum. Water-based screen printing inks have better environmental profile but require careful cure temperature control — undercured inks fail wet rubbing tests. Plastisol inks have better durability but contain PVC and may conflict with REACH chemical requirements for some buyers. Digital heat transfer prints are better suited for complex multi-color designs but have higher per-unit cost above 2,000 pieces.
